EFFECTS OF OTHER MAJOR RAW CHINESE MEDICINES

Since we are on the topic of raw medicines, I would like to explain the common effects of the main Chinese medical raw materials. There are said to be as many as 300 species of raw medicines, considering only the major types, 40 of which are in common use. Among the raw materials Tian Xian Liquid, Radix Glycyrrhizae, Radix Ginseng, and Rhizoma Atractyloidis Macrocephalae are raw medicines that are more commonly used.

The main raw medicines are:

Rehmannia
From the roots of the red Rehmannia; this enriches the blood, exerts a strengthening and pacifying effect on the body, and is useful for releasing heat

Caulis Akebiae
The lendrilled vine of the ricepaper pith. It produces relief of ulceration, diuresis, favors removal of pus, and regulates the menses.

Aprical Kernel
From apricot kernels; known for anti-cough properties and expelling dampness.

Hyssop
The roots of Hyssopl; useful for purification of the blood, regulation of the menses and diuresis.

Anise
The fruit of anise; fragrant and strengthening to the stomach; produces dissolution of phlegm and expulsion of pathogenic wind.

Prunella
The stamen of the nepenthes mirabilis; relieves ulceration and produces diuresis.

Plantago seed
from the seeds, leaves, and stems of the plantago; releases heat, stops cough and diarrhea; also relieves ulceration and produces diuresis.

Coptisroot
The roots and stems of the Coptisroot; bitter in taste, it strengthens the stomach and regulates functions of the intestine.

Pinellia Tuberifera
The roots and stems of wu bing shao; suppresses vomiting and removes phlegm.

Tarragon
The stamen of riverside moxa; relieves ulceration, releases heat, stimulates diuresis, expels parasites.

Radix platycodi
The roots of radix platycodi; removes phlegm and expels pus.

Cortex phellodendri
The bark of Huang Nie; bitter in taste, it strengthens the stomach, suppresses and relieves ulceration, and regulates the intestines.

Pueraariae
The roots of the kunzu vine; stimulates perspiration, releases heat and stops cough.

Mountain Gardenia Florida
The fruits of Gardenia Florida; pacifying effects; relieves ulceration, produces diuresis, suppresses bleeding.

Mulberry root bark
The bark, leaves and stems of the mulberry tree; strengthening effects; relieve ulceration, stimulate diuresis, stop cough.

Radix Sophorae Flavescentis
The roots of Radix Sophorae Flavescentis; strengthens the stomach, produce diuresis, soothe pain; release heat, expel parasites.

Alismatis
The stems and roots of water alismatis; stimulate diuresis, expel dampness, regulate thirst.

Xanthoxylum piperitum
The fruits of Xanthoxylum piperitum; fragrant and strengthening to the stomach, relieves ulceration, stimulates diuresis and expels parasites.

Paeonia
The roots of paeonia; suppresses and soothes pain; soothes ligaments and purifies the blood.

Biao men dong
The roots of the She Xu tree; removes phlegm, stops cough, nourishes and strengthens the body, releases heat.

Ginger
The roots and stems of ginger; fragrant, hot tasting; strengthens the stomach, used as spice.

Cuidium officinale
The roots and stems of cuidium officinale; purify and nourish the blood, soothe pain, strengthen the body.

Rhubarb horse-tail
The roots and stems of rhubarb horsetail; cathartic and laxative effect; strengthen the stomach, relieve ulceration.

Dandelions
The roots, leaves and stems of dandelions; strengthen the stomach, produce diuresis, purify the blood, stimulate milk production.

Fructus Schisandrae
The fruits of Korean Fructus Schisandrae; nourishing and strengthening effects; stop cough, suppress diarrhea.

Chiretta
The roots of chiretta; relieves pain, has pacifying and strengthening effects; purifies the blood.

Fructus Ziziphi Jujubae
The fruits of the date palm; has diuretic and strengthening effects.

Cinnamon
The root skin and stem skin of cassia; bitterly fragrant; strengthens the stomach, used as a spice.

Caix seeds
The seeds of Caix; relieves ulceration, produces diuresis, drainage and strengthening effects; kills warts

Radix Ledebouriellae
The leaves and stems of Radix Ledebouriellae; causes perspiration, releases heat and soothes pain.

Cortex Magnoliae Officinalis
The bark of Cortex Magnoliae Officinalis; has suppressive effects, removes phlegm, produces diuresis.

Cortex Moutan Radicis
The peel of peony; relieves ulceration and pain, releases heat, purifies the blood.

Shrubby
The stem of shrubby; causes perspiration, releases heat and stops cough.

Tuckahoe
The core of pine; produces diuresis, has pacifying effects.

Bupleurum
The roots of Three Islands Bupleurum; releases heat and toxins; soothes pain, exerts pacifying effects.

Vulgaris
The leaves of moxa; release heat, produce diuresis, regulate menses, remove phlegm, stop bleeding, exerts strengthening effect.

Gentian
The roots and stems of Gentian; bitter tasting, strengthens stomach.
